Understanding Stainless Steel Gauge Thickness
Gauge is a standard unit for measuring the thickness of stainless steel sheets. Lower gauge numbers indicate thicker materials, while higher gauge numbers represent thinner sheets.
Gauges vary from material to material (i.e. 12 GA Stainless Steel is not the same as 12 GA Aluminum or Mild Steel).
Common Stainless Steel Gauge Applications
12 Gauge Stainless Steel is 2.778 mm (0.10937 in) thick. It's used for heavy-duty applications, structures, and frames.
14 Gauge Stainless Steel is 1.984 mm (0.07812 in) thick. It's used for medium-duty applications, enclosures, housings.
16 Gauge Stainless Steel is 1.587 mm (0.0625 in) thick. It's used for light-duty applications, cabinets, covers.
