Understanding Aluminum Gauge Thickness

Gauge is a standard unit for measuring the thickness of aluminum sheets. Lower gauge numbers indicate thicker materials, while higher gauge numbers represent thinner sheets.

Gauges vary from material to material (i.e. 12 GA Aluminum is not the same as 12 GA Stainless Steel).

Common Aluminum Gauge Applications

How Thick is 12 GA Aluminum?

12 Gauge Aluminum is 2.053 mm (0.08081 in) thick. It's used for heavy-duty applications, structures, and frames.

How Thick is 14 GA Aluminum?

14 Gauge Aluminum is 1.628 mm (0.06408 in) thick. It's used for medium-duty applications, enclosures, housings.

How Thick is 16 GA Aluminum?

16 Gauge Aluminum is 1.291 mm (0.05082 in) thick. It's used for light-duty applications, cabinets, covers.
